Year 5/6 Trip to Mathsworld

To help foster our love for using and applying mathematics and problem solving a selection of our mathematicians took a trip to Southbank to Mathsworld. MathsWorld is London’s first maths discovery centre, located beneath a railway arch on London’s vibrant South Bank, just a few minutes walk from major tube and train stations.

When we arrived the children were so excited to see all the amazing hands on maths problems including finding out about the catenary curve – the most solid shape to hold up structures in architecture. There were lots of problems involving shape and space but our favourite was the huge bubble machine where the children got to trap themselves in a huge bubble!

We then got the opportunity to go upstairs where we were met with more activities – this time focusing a lot more on number and logic problems. The children tried to decipher different odes such a pig pen, morse code and even tried to break into some vaults using their knowledge of number.

We were also able to get to work as a team together to build a huge dome using huge rods to try and build a structure that would allow all the group to go underneath. As you can see from the photos we succeeded!
