Year 3 Visit to Hampstead Heath

Last week, Year 3 travelled back in time… all the way to the Stone Age! Well, almost! We took an exciting trip to Hampstead Heath, where we spent the day learning about how early humans lived, hunted, and survived thousands of years ago.

️ Into the Wild…

As soon as we arrived at Hampstead Heath, we knew we were in for a real adventure. Surrounded by towering trees, rustling leaves, and wide open spaces, it was easy to imagine what life might have been like for Stone Age people.

We met our expert guides, who taught us all about Stone Age life. We learned how people found food, made tools out of stone, and built shelters using natural materials. Everyone was amazed to discover just how clever and resourceful early humans were — and all without electricity or supermarkets!

Making Fire – The Stone Age Way

One of the most exciting parts of the day was learning how to make fire — just like Stone Age people did! We watched in awe as our guide showed us how to use flint and steel to create sparks. Then we had a go ourselves!

With careful hands (and lots of teamwork), we managed to get our fires going. It took patience, focus, and a lot of blowing — but the look of pride on everyone’s faces when the flames finally appeared was priceless!

Stone Age Skills and Fun

We also tried other Stone Age activities, like:

  • Building mini shelters from sticks, leaves and mud

  • Practising hunting techniques (don’t worry, no animals were harmed!)

  • Learning how Stone Age people used the environment around them to survive

It was hands-on learning at its best — muddy, fun, and full of discovery.
